KATHY REED: SOLO WORK > NOTES TO MY GRANDCHILDREN/NOTES TO MYSELF

Created during the pandemic, this group of artworks utilizes family textiles, hand-dyed silks, found fabrics, found objects, embroidery, and painted images.
I became aware, on a visceral level, of the fragility of life and of the value of the stories and wisdom passed down through generations. I asked myself: what advice would I have wanted my parents and grandparents to have imparted to me in clear, simple, and visual formats? What would I like to leave for my children and grandchildren?
I believe that used textiles carry imprints of energy from people who have had them in their lives. They are encoded with emotions, thoughts, and dreams. Sewing has always been a part of my art-making practice, as well as my everyday life. Marks made with thread are equivalent to me as marks made with any drawing or painting media. In this series of works, I have mixed my hand with the hands of those who have gone before me and the energy of people that I don't know, but that chance has sent my way.
